We live in a world of seven billion, one billion starving, 1.7 billion suffering from malnutrition caused illness and an environment more damaged now than ever before. Sustainability is a word that encompasses different areas of human endeavour and approaches.

It is an efficient mirage with concerns and pursuits of saving the environment, thriving economically and sharing fairly.  It is about taking a long view on green investments and ensuring fair pricing in our highly globalised markets. It is a view where the environment, economy and fairness go in tandem. It is a paradigm where the economy grows, the environment is undamaged and those who work on it get their fair share, all at the same time. A sustainable world is one where the tools of economics are used to create agriculturalists of the future who maintain and interact with the ecosystem.

Sustainability is more than being self-sufficient and conserving resources. It is a state of responsibility where money and energy is spent on items of real value, things we really need and not what is in vogue. It is about injecting sobriety in our personal choices with buying and consumerism. It is a state of mind that doesn’t waste and considers the globe. To be sustainable is to be aware, think globally and act locally.

Sustainability is a shift of attitude from old paradigm thought to an efficient one adapting to our modern life. It is about educating the young about where their food comes from and fostering an informed attitude about the world locally and globally. Sustainability is about helping young farmers thrive and encourage new approaches to farming and conservation. It is a philosophy where well-being of the human comes before wealth or blind and one-sided economic growth.

Recently a short video on sustainability has produced by Marco Dazzi where Dr. Zeremariam Fre, Executive Director of PENHA has interviewed. This video tries to bring the different perceptions, understandings and explanations given to the word sustainability. The following is the short introduction given about the video:

'Sustainable words' it's a travel around the meaning of the word 'sustainability', a short dictionary which contains the definitions of environment, green mobility, ethical economy and a more human way of living. Filmed with Super 8 Film and with the contribute of old films footage from all around the world, it's a real and meanwhile metaphoric travel to understand the meaning of a word so many time used but seldom respected.
